It’s that time of year once again. We all cringe as we await the new coding updates.
One consolation: At least we know that the changes are staggered a bit so they don’t hit us all at once. The new ICD-10 codes are active as of October 1, 2024.
The 2025 CPT codes will go into effect on January 1.
There are 270 new codes, 38 revised codes, and 112 deleted codes. So let’s make a quick overview of these changes and where they will occur.
Evaluation and Management includes 17 new telemedicine codes (98000-98016). There are also a few deletions in this section as well.
Surgery has 33 new codes for 2025. These are for autografts, arthroplasty, and other surgical procedures. Look for a few deleted codes as well.
Radiology has 6 MR safety implant codes (76014-76019). In the pathology and laboratory sections, there are 13 new codes, including 81195 for reporting cytogenetic analyses. PLA codes were released Jan. 1, 2024, but they make their debut in CPT 2025.
In the Medicine section on COVID-19, many of the older codes that were taken out of use last year are to be deleted. The administration code 90480 has been added, along with the current vaccine codes. This section will also include a few other new, deleted, and revised codes.
Finally, for Category III (as in the medical section above), there are new, revised, and deleted codes. Many early-release codes went into effect in 2024 but are added in the 2025 code set. The administrative multianalyte assay with algorithmic analyses code 0020M, effective since July 2024, has officially been added to the 2025 code set.
